What Is Student Finance England?

Student Finance England (SFE) is a UK Government service that provides financial support to eligible students studying at approved higher education institutions in England. It is administered by the Student Loans Company (SLC) on behalf of the UK Government.

Types of Student Finance Available

Eligible students may be able to apply for:

Financial support to help with day-to-day living costs, including accommodation, food, transport, and other essential expenses. This loan is usually paid directly into your bank account in instalments throughout the academic year.

Additional Financial Support

Depending on your personal circumstances and eligibility, you may also be able to access additional support, including:

  • Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) – Support for eligible students with disabilities or long-term health conditions.
  • Childcare Grant – Assistance with registered childcare costs for eligible students with children.
  • Parents’ Learning Allowance – Additional financial support for students with dependent children.
  • Adult Dependants’ Grant – Support for eligible students who have an adult financially dependent on them.

Eligibility criteria and funding amounts are determined by Student Finance England and may change from time to time.

Who Is Eligible for Student Finance?

Your eligibility for Student Finance depends on several factors, including your immigration or residency status, the course you choose, the university you attend, and your previous study history.

You may be eligible if you:

  • Are a British citizen
  • Are an Irish citizen
  • Hold Settled or Pre-Settled Status under the EU Settlement Scheme
  • Have Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or another eligible immigration status
  • Have ordinarily lived in the UK (or meet the relevant residency requirements) before your course begins, in accordance with Student Finance regulations
  • Are enrolling on an eligible higher education course at an approved UK university or college
  • Are studying your first higher education qualification, unless an exception applies under Student Finance rules
  • Meet the age and eligibility requirements set by Student Finance England
